Well boys and girls, things start to get very interesting now. Southern Cal got beat by Oregon State Wednesday night and regardless of how Oklahoma does, a Georgia win should put them back on top. I waited to the end of the UConn – Louisville game so that I could make sure that there wasn’t anything else I’d missed to include in this one. It’s getting about time to start rocking the boat and we’re now less than 3 weeks away from the BCS ruining another season, families and arrest records all over the country – the southeast especially.
Let’s talk about the buzz around the water cooler from Thursday – USC losing to 25-point underdog Oregon State. I’ve heard all manner of things from USC had too much time off early in the season to they started reading their own press to, get this shit, that the PAC-10 is that good. I can counter with just one statement: Those who do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
That’s pointed at USC in a couple of ways. First, the last time they played at Oregon State they lost as a heavy favorite. Second, they always have one game every year where they completely lose their focus and lose to someone that had no business being in the game after halftime. It happens to every great team every year (losing focus, that is), it’s just up to the coaches and the teams to get that focus back in time to pull out a close win.
That statement points to the media just as much. Every year, you guys anoint a team in week 3 or 4 and declare them to be head and shoulders above everyone else. Then along comes a Stanford or Oregon St or a Pitt and ruins your best laid plans. An overflow of facts in evidence has made the media back away from their favorite darlings, Ohio State, but they were lucky enough to have USC to fill that gap this year. Oops again, huh boys? read this entry »
Well guys, I was going to give a live blog throughout UGA’s coming out party on Primetime TV against Arizona State. This god awful iteration of Windows called Vista had other ideas. I started to apply 10 updates about 15 minutes before kickoff and just got the laptop back up and functional. There’s 3 minutes left in the third quarter with Georgia leading 21-10.
Basically, I’m going to post and repeatedly update as the game goes along. What I’ve seen so far:
Knowshon is Knowshon. It’s getting good when that leap to the pylon wasn’t that spectacular (by comparison).
We’ve finally found the Robin to Massaquoi’s Batman, and his name is AJ Green. That kid’s the reason I said I was finally excited about UGA’s receiving corps last week. It’s about time they started really targeting him and making him part of the offense.
We’re killing ourselves with the hankies, but the refs aren’t helping. Don’t get me wrong, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot but some of those penalties are pure bullshit. Tripping on Massaquoi? Tripping WHO? And what was that bogus Leaping call on the first ASU field goal attempt? I have NEVER seen that called before. read this entry »
The By God University of Georgia Dawgs football team opened the season with atop the college football polls (both the AP and USA Today). This is as much a reflection of the team they’re returning as the monkey-stomping they put on the LAST undefeated team last season, Hawaii, on New Year’s Day in the Sugar Bowl. It was also something of an apology to A) the Bulldog Nation for leaving us out of the National Championship Game and B) the rest of the college football world for sticking us with 2 wholly uncompelling matchups in the Rose and Sugar Bowls.
Let me address something right up front – I don’t think that, under the ShopVac abortion that is the BCS System, Georgia belonged in the National Championship game. They didn’t even win their division, let alone the BEST conference in all of college athletics. But they were no doubt one of the 4 best teams in the country at bowl time (National Champion LSU, the Buffalo Bills of college football – Ohio State, and Southern Cal) being the others. This wasn’t supposed to turn into another BCS rant, but to hell with it – might as well start now. read this entry »
